Like Everyone Else
“How many of you have been told that you’re special?” I asked. Twenty hands instantly shot into the air. One by one I asked each student to tell me why they were unique, and I received 20 variations of the same answer.
How many times have you been asked to describe yourself? How many times have you given a generic description? I’m hardworking, love to work in teams… I have a passion for this work!
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but that doesn’t seem very special.
Knowing how to respond takes some self-assessment, practice, and getting a grip on reality. Tell me what inspires you. In your wildest of dreams, what do you achieve? What makes you different from him, from her, and from me? Most importantly, why does it matter?
So tell me again.
Why are you special?
